The Mayor of Thornbury is the First Citizen of the town and plays an important civic role in recognising and celebrating everything that makes Thornbury a strong and vibrant community. A key part of the Mayor’s role is to say thank you — acknowledging the dedication of the many volunteers, community groups, and individuals who contribute so much to town life.
Thornbury benefits from a wide range of voluntary and community activities, and these deserve to be celebrated and shared more widely. Wherever possible, the Town Council will publish a short summary and photograph of events attended by the Mayor to help highlight this valuable work as well as the Mayor providing monthly updates to fellow councillors.
To support attendance, organisers are encouraged to give 2 weeks’ notice where possible. Every effort will be made to attend community events, which are among the most enjoyable and rewarding aspects of the Mayor’s role.
Attending Events:
The Mayor of Thornbury attends many events each year. They help to raise the profile of many local groups, charities and businesses and promote and celebrate the town’s many organisations’ achievements and milestones.
Invitations to events may include:
- Civic events - including the Remembrance Parade and Service
- Community events and fun days
- Fundraising events for local businesses and community groups
- Visits to local community groups, schools and care homes
- Hosting receptions for visiting dignitaries and other community leaders
- Attending religious events of all denominations
Any invitation to an event which is considered as putting the Town Council at reputational risk or which could be considered as in conflict with the Town Council’s responsibilities will be refused.
The Mayor may choose to only wear full regalia at civic events.
