Local Events

Thornbury is home to many clubs and organisations, ranging from sports, support groups, family history, amateur dramatics and much more. The MyThornbury website is a good resource for finding out local information is available on the MyThornbury Website

Thornbury Carnival

This annual event usually runs on the first Saturday in July and is popular with residents and visitors from the surrounding area. Historically, it has opened with a parade down the High Street and onto the Mundy Playing Fields, where there are a variety of rides, stalls, attractions and live performances. The event is run by an independent organisation, with permission from Thornbury Town Council to use the Mundy Playing Fields.

Heritage Open Doors Event at the Town Hall

Historic venues across the country open their doors to the general public each September, to take a closer look at some of the area’s special features. The Town Hall, St. Mary’s Church and other local venues have taken part, welcoming visitors into their premises to see areas and artifacts usually hidden away from public view.

For more information, visit the Town Hall page on our website, or to see the full list of venues participating, visit the Heritage Open Days website

Remembrance Sunday Parade

Each November, local organisations are involved in a parade and memorial service for those who have lost their lives in wars. Poppy wreathes are laid at the memorial in St. Mary’s Church and the High Street is closed for the impressive parade, with permission from South Gloucestershire Council.

Thornbury Roundtable Firework Display

This event raises money for local charities and good causes. It is run by Thornbury Roundtable, with tickets available online and from local shops. The event is a favourite on the town calendar, featuring dramatic firework displays for children and adults and a large bonfire. Held on the Mundy Playing Fields, with permission from the Town Council, it hosts stalls and refreshments.

Thornbury Christmas Lights Switch On

In the middle of November, this event starts the countdown to Christmas! Held in the High Street, with permission from South Gloucestershire Council, the event features rides, refreshments and music. This event is run by Thornbury Christmas Lights Association, formed in 1991. The switch on signifies the start of the period where the High Street and Castle Street are lit up in the dark winter evenings.
