Thornbury Town Council Flagpole

Every month, Thornbury Town Council flies a different flag on the Flagpoles at the Town Hall, to celebrate our local and wider community, important dates or global issues.

March's Flag 2026 - International Women's Day

This March, we’re proud to be flying the Suffrage flag above the Thornbury Town Hall in honour of International Women's Day. The green, white and violet colours represent hope, purity and dignity, and pay tribute to the courageous women who fought for the right to vote and greater equality. We celebrate their legacy and reaffirm our commitment to fairness, opportunity and respect for women and girls in our community and beyond.

St David's Day - 1 March 2026

This week, we are proud to be flying the national flag of Wales to mark St David's Day, celebrated each year on 1 March. The day honours Saint David, the patron saint of Wales, and is a celebration of Welsh heritage, culture and language. Traditionally, people mark the occasion by wearing daffodils or leeks, recognised national symbols of Wales, and by taking part in parades and community events.

We are delighted to recognise this important day and, as part of our commitment to inclusivity and community, look forward to celebrating all of our home nations’ special days throughout the year, including St Patrick's Day and St George's Day.

February's Flag 2026 - World Cancer Day

During February, we will be flying a cancer awareness flag to mark World Cancer Day.

Campaigners say, "cancer touches millions of lives in countless ways but it doesn't define who we are. We are more than a disease, more than a statistic. The World Cancer Day Campaign 2025-27, United by Unique places people at the centre of care and explores new ways of making a difference."

January's Flag 2026 - Holocaust Memorial Day

In January, we will be flying the Holocaust Memorial Day Flag to remember the genocide that occurred during World War II.

This year's theme is 'Bridging Generations, a call to action'.  This is a reminder that the responsibility of remembrance doesn't end with the survivors, it lives on through their children, their grandchildren and through all of us.  This theme encourages us all to engage actively with the past, to listen, to learn and to carry those lessons forward.  By doing so, we build a bridge between memory and action, between history and hope for the future.

November's Flag 2025

NOVEMBER IS A MONTH FOR REMEMBRANCE

Remembrance, particularly Remembrance Sunday, this year celebrated on 9 November, is a national opportunity to remember the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life.

We are flying the Royal British Legion flag from the Town Hall this month to remember the Armed Forces, and their families, from Britain and the Commonwealth and the vital role played by the emergency services and to those who have lost their lives as a result of conflict or terrorism.

St Andrew's Day 30th November 2025

As a Council, we are delighted to mark St Andrew’s Day and celebrate Scotland’s Patron Saint.

Over the coming year, we look forward to recognising each of the national days of the home countries.

This week, we especially acknowledge the members of our community with Scottish heritage and warmly celebrate the many contributions they make to life in Thornbury.
