Small Planters, Big Impact: Thornbury’s Edible Garden Project Blooms
Thornbury Town Council has joined forces with Thornbury In Bloom to create three mini vegetable and herb gardens in self-watering planters at the side of the Town Hall. The planters feature a mix of pollinator-friendly plants, vegetables, herbs, and other edible species. Each planter has its own theme and comes complete with a sign explaining what it contains, some tips and fun facts, and explains how the plants can work together to help keep pests away.
A Council spokesperson said “We’re very happy to work with Thornbury In Bloom on a project that brings so many benefits. These planters not only expand the variety of plants cared for by Thornbury In Bloom, but also highlight how even small green spaces can support urban biodiversity and encourage people to connect with nature.” This has been a true partnership, with the Town Council supplying the plants, signage, and ongoing watering, while Thornbury In Bloom provided the planters, soil, and continues to tend to the displays.
The project aligns directly with the Town Council’s broader environmental goals as set out in the Local Climate and Nature Action Plan. It also supports the recently-launched Community Nature Reserve project, which encourages residents to recognise and value diverse forms of green space—whether in a window box, a verge, or a planter outside.
