Pupils from Christ The King Primary School enjoyed an exciting and informative visit to Thornbury Town Hall, where they learned about local government, explored the historic building and met Councillors.
The children were welcomed into the Council Chamber by Mayor Helen Ball and Town Councillors Gil Gilroy, Christine Carter, Kath Greenman and Chris Davies. Mayor Ball explained the role of the Mayor and the work undertaken by Thornbury Town Council on behalf of the local community.
The young people then split into groups to take part in a tour of the Town Hall and learn more about its history. During the visit, they explored the former police cell, viewed displays in the entrance hall showcasing Thornbury Town Council through the years, and discovered the story behind the historic Thornbury Quilt.
When not on tour, the pupils took part in a number of activities, including designing a flag for Thornbury and reading a fun factsheet about the Town Hall. The flag competition produced some excellent entries, with the two winning designs set to receive Certificates of Merit.
Throughout the morning, the pupils showed great enthusiasm and curiosity, asking councillors lots of thoughtful questions and taking part in lively discussions about local government and the community. They were exceptionally well behaved and a credit to their school.
Mayor Helen Ball said: "This was a very enjoyable and busy morning. It was a real pleasure to meet and talk to the young people. We want all Year 6 pupils in Thornbury to have the opportunity to visit our Town Hall and find out about the Council's work. We hope to extend this invitation to more primary schools next year."
The visit formed part of Thornbury Town Council's commitment to helping young people learn more about local democracy and encouraging them to take an active interest in their community.
