Join us this Earth Day 2026 as Thornbury comes together to celebrate our environment and take an exciting step forward in protecting what sustains us most—water. This special community event marks the official launch of Thornbury’s participation in the Watermark Town initiative, a program that supports towns in safeguarding local water sources for generations to come.
This relaxed yet thought-provoking event will explore the vital role water plays in shaping our town—environmentally, socially, historically, culturally and economically. The evening will feature short talks from Meg Wise of Thornbury Museum telling us about historic water management in Thornbury, Alan Stealey from Thornbury Town Council who will give an update on the Splashpad replacement project, and Richard White and Paul Gardham from Severn Area Rescue Association in Sharpness talking about water safety and the Severn.
There will also be a panel of local experts, community leaders, and water specialists, including the Bristol and Avon Rivers Trust, Rich Edwards - Artist, and Wessex Water followed by an open Q&A, offering a chance to ask questions, share perspectives, and take part in meaningful conversation about water stewardship and sustainability.
There will also be opportunities to connect with local groups such as the Thornbury Wayfinders, Thornbury in Bloom, Grow Your Own Thornbury, Plastic Free Thornbury and St Mary's Eco Church as we enjoy some light refreshments, to explore how water shapes life in Thornbury—and how each of us can play a role in caring for it.
Whether you’re curious about local water issues, interested in climate resilience, or simply want to be part of a positive community moment this Earth Day, this event invites you to connect, reflect, and help shape Thornbury’s water-wise future.
Doors open at 6.30. You can even join a waterside guided walk to the Church courtesy of the Ramblers and Thornbury Wayfinders (details to follow).
All in all it should be a fabulous evening - we hope to see you there!
