Thornbury Residents Create Homes for Garden Birds This Spring
Armed with paintbrushes, kits, and plenty of enthusiasm, local families have been turning gardens into safe havens for robins, blue tits, and great tits. Thornbury Town Council’s recent bird box building events, held as part of National Nest Box Week, brought together children and adults alike to create cosy homes for the town’s feathered visitors.
On Saturday 14 February, Valentine’s Day celebrations saw 11 adults and 8 children construct robin, blue tit, and great tit boxes from kits, combining creativity with a love of nature.
Two days later, on Monday 16 February, 24 children aged 5–11 joined 14 adults to build and decorate robin boxes. Great fun was had by all who attended, and a parent from the afternoon session emailed the Town Council afterwards; “It was so heartwarming to see children from the community come together to create, learn, and enjoy something special. Opportunities like this truly make a difference, and we really appreciate the time and effort you put into making it happen. Thank you again for such a wonderful experience” which was fantastic to hear.
Each participant went home with a wild bird seed starter pack and guidance on how to support local birds in their gardens.
With birds starting to look for mates this month, now is the perfect time for Thornbury residents to put up a nest box and welcome spring’s feathered visitors!
Please do keep an eye on the Town Council’s website for upcoming events.
